Combining both figurative and non-figurative elements with her love of strong lines and vivid colors, Hotzl who has exhibited her work internationally, from London and Sweden, to the U.S. and Hungary creates bold, poetic works. Inspired by her encounters with different people, in one body of work, she paints large close-up portraits. Some of the people she paints are real some of them are fantasy. Expressing her impressions of the people she meets, these works also reflect the varied expressions that can be found in the human face. Her works have a timeless, magical quality. Reminiscent of a dream voyage to the calm beaches of another planet, her pictures are deeply personal, evoking her own subconsciousness while also revealing universal truths about the journey and celebration of life. Helena Hötzl harnesses and manipulates perceptual reality in her work, using as a foundation startlingly vivid painterly sequences of events or phenomena such as birth, life, sex, nature and loss. Born in Alingsås, Sweden work highlights elemental images, using dramatic ploys such as contrasts in scale, shifts in focus, mirrored reflections, and multiple or layered surfaces. Sensory perception for Hötzl is a spiritual activity, one that leads to a heightened awareness of both nature and culture—this thought process points to a new kind of realism—one that is engaged with the actual processes of life. The result is a combination of psychedelic/decorative vistas with layers of text and form.
